The Black Isle - An Aerial 360° Virtual Tour

Scotland360° Virtual Tours

During the course of 2019, I have been developing a Black Isle Aerial 360° Virtual Tour and am now inviting Black Isle businesses to feature in this unique advertisement for the Black Isle.

There are three accommodation providers who currently feature in the tour and others in the pipeline. Look out for updates and new entries over the coming months.

Use the links in the adjacent photographs to see some of the possibilities for the use of 360o photography as an interactive, immersive advertising medium.

Whilst this particular tour has been developed for the Black Isle, as a fully qualified and insured CAA Approved UAS (Drone) Pilot with comprehensive CAA Permission for Commercial Operations, I can also offer a range of bespoke 360° photography options.

Scotland360° Sea to Summit Photography Courses

The 2020 Collection.... So Far

The 2020 series of workshops is taking shape with a number of courses now advertised scheduled and others in preparation.

New for 2020 is the Adobe Lightroom Editing Workshop. Adobe Lightroom is one of the photographer’s “go to” software packages for post processing and this workshop will take you through the complete workflow from memory card to the final, finished result.

Making use of the evening light, the ever popular Low Light Photography Workshop runs in February and we're hoping to catch the spectacular springtime sunsets at North Kessock in April.

April also sees a Beginners evening workshop running over two evenings. Based on the Ness Islands in Inverness, this foundation workshop is those starting on their photographic journey, and those who would like to better understand camera controls.

May sees full day landscape and mountain photography workshops, with the potential for magical springtime light to be harnessed in iconic locations. Join me on the mountains in Sutherland, with long distance views to the Sutherland hills and the Outer Isles, whilst in beautiful Glen Affric we can use scale to define and discover the secrets of perspective.

In June, I'm introducing a new Photography Tour which spends a day visiting inspirational and photogenic locations on the way to Skye. Kintail, Eilean Donan, Skye, Lochalsh and Plockton are all options for this tour which is open to all photographic abilities.

Brand new for 2020 are the two trips in association with Hebridean Adventures, on board the MV Monadhliath. The Sea Kayaking Expedition is planned for July and visits the Summer Isles, the Shiant Islands and the east coast of Harris. This is a unique way of discovering the islands of the Minch, paddling in waters rich in cetaceans and seals, so we never know what we might encounter while out on the water!

And in August, I'm delighted I'm delighted to be leading a 5 day guided photography expedition, again in partnership with Hebridean Adventures on board the MV Monadhliath.

There's more to come, with new locations and topics. Look out for more in Skye and Wester Ross in particular and new venues for mountain photography.

Photography Expedition in partnership with Hebridean Adventures

29th August 2020 to 2nd September 2020

New for 2020....

I'm delighted to be leading a 5 day guided photography expedition in partnership with Hebridean Adventures on board the MV Monadhliath.

Departing from Mallaig, our photographic odyssey will take you to some of the most photogenic locations in the West Highlands. Travelling by boat, approaching our destinations by sea, allows for some unique photographic perspectives on this amazing journey....

We plan to visit the remote Knoydart peninsula with views to lofty mountains, stunning landscapes and with ample opportunity for wildlife spotting. From there we'll explore Sandaig, the home of Gavin Maxwell's "Ring of Bright Water" before cruising to Isle Ornsay on Skye and on to the Isle of Soay, another Gavin Maxwell haunt.

We'll journey into Loch Scavaig and underneath the Black Cuillin mountains of Skye. Impressive and foreboding, these ancient mountains form a photographic gateway into the upper reaches of Loch Scavaig and hopefully an opportunity to land at Coruisk to capture the experience of the Skye Cuillins towering above us.

More information and a Booking Form are available on the Hebridean Adventures website and we're really looking forward to seeing you on board.

Sea Kayaking Expedition in partnership with Hebridean Adventures

25th to 29th July 2020

Tania and I are delighted to be leading a 5 day sea kayaking expedition in partnership with Hebridean Adventures on board the MV Monadhliath.

Paddle the Summer Isles, exploring the stacs on the way to Priest Island, discover the Shiants and be amazed at the spectacular coastline of Harris, all in a Scottish Western Isles adventure. This sea kayaking cruise, hosted in partnership with Hebridean Adventures, is based on MV Monadhliath departing from Ullapool to discover these beautiful and remote islands of the North Minch.

On this very special sea kayaking adventure cruise to the Western Highlands of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, we want to give you the chance to enjoy the stunning beauty of summer paddling in the Summer Isles, discovering the amazing Shiant Isles from the water with their seabird colonies (including thousands of puffins) and taking the time to enjoy the scenic Isle of Scalpay and the east coast of the Isle of Harris.

Sea kayaking in this stunning Hebridean wilderness setting of islands and coastlines is a special experience to enjoy and one you will remember for a long time. The added possible bonus is we will be paddling in waters rich in cetaceans and seals, so we never know what we might encounter while out on the water!

"Sea Kayak Safety and Rescue" - Gordon Brown's latest Sea Kayaking Publication

The sea kayakers amongst you will all know Gordon Brown and that, over the years, Gordon and I have developed a number of themes for sea kayaking and photography – often involving some silliness…

However, Gordon also has extremely high standards when it comes to sea kayaking safety and the publication of his latest book, “Sea Kayak Safety and Rescue”, brings together Gordon's vast experience in the subject. "Each chapter starts with a real life incident which sets the scene and helps to emphasise what follows".

As Gordon started the preparation for his book, I was delighted to be asked to supply some of the photography for the section on “Towing”.

Gordon’s book was published in July and is available from the Pesda Press website.

The 2019 Highland Hospice "Highland Scenes" Calendar

I'm delighted that two of my photographs are being used in the 2019 Highland Hospice "Highland Scenes" calendar.

"Loch Broom, the view from Braemore" is used for June and "Achmelvich, a seat with a view" is used for July.

Available online and at the Highland Hospice shop in Queensgate, Inverness, these calendars would make a great stocking filler and at the same time raising money for a very worthwhile charity.

Balranald Campsite - The Corncrake Glamping Pod

Whilst on holiday this summer in our caravan on North Uist, we stayed at the Balranald Hebridean Holidays campsite on the west coast of the island.

The campsite has a superb setting, right next to the beach at Hougharry with views to the Monach Islands and it's a great base from which to explore the Uists. Balranald is a small family run business and, with excellent facilities, it's simply a great place to stay.

We were pitched next to the Corncrake Glamping Pod on the campsite which was certainly popular and, talking to Anne the owner of the campsite one morning, I offered to take some photographs of the Pod. It was a lovely day with great light to show off the exterior of the Pod and there was also an opportunity to photograph the interior of the Pod with the 360° camera.

A 360° camera is ideal for photographing small spaces and also for giving a feel for what the pod is like inside. Setting up the camera on the tripod, I soon had the photograph I needed of the interior of the pod.

Click on the icon on either of the exterior photographs of the Pod and you will see a high resolution photograph. Clicking on the icon will take you to the Balranald Campsite Facebook Page.

Whilst photographing the Pod and, as it was such great light, I also took the opportunity to take an aerial photograph of the campsite using my drone. Taken from just over 100m in height, the photograph to the left shows Balranald Campsite and its proximity to the beach at Hougharry.

The interior photograph of the Pod is posted below and clicking on it will bring up the full resolution 360° photograph of the iterior. Pan and zoom to look around the interior of the Pod and if you would like to experience the Pod for yourself, please contact Anne at info@balranaldhebrideanholidays.com or phone 01876 510304.

Scotland360 and Skyak Adventures Sea Kayaking Photography Course

Scotland360° and Skyak Adventures have recently run the 2018 Sea Kayaking Photography course .

During the three day course on Skye, we explored photography from a sea kayaking perspective at the Skyak Adventures base at Broadford, at Tarskavaig on the Sleat Peninsula and at Armadale Bay.

From surfing sea kayaks to underwater photography to rolling, there was lots to explore and lots of fun to be had. As well as photography, there was a great deal of use of video this year - think slo-mo, 360 immersive and positioning of video cameras as "bow cams", "cockpit cams" and underwater cams.

And true to form with any Skyak Advenures course, there was a great deal of fun, laughter and balancing games, all courtesy of Gordon Brown, inspirational sea kayak coach who provided the kayaking coaching to complement the photography tutoring.

If you would like to see some of the great results from the course, why not visit the Scotland 360° sea Kayaking Photography Facebook page. Enjoy the photograph albums for Day 2 and Day 3. If you're inspired for sea kayaking photography workshops, then please contact me for details.

Great Glen Canoe Trail 360

Blog Single

It's great to see some output from the Highlands and Islands Enterprise 360 photography courses that I'm running through 2017 and 2018.

Below is an excerpt from the "In Your Element" website which has a great series of 360 photographs taken on the Great Glen Canoe Trail.

"Maybe you’ve heard of the Great Glen Canoe Trail, maybe you’ve paddled it, or maybe you’ve driven through the Great Glen and wondered what it would be like on the water. Our 360 degree photo tour gives you the opportunity to see what it’s like from the paddler’s perspective, as they make their way through this awesome glen"

The link below will take you to the "In Your Element" website where you can explore the photo tour, starting in Fort William, paddling up the lochs of the Great Glen and finishing up in Inverness. Photographed with a Nikon KeyMission waterproof camera mounted on a canoe, this is a great output from the 360° Masterclasses which I am running for Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

The Digital Masterclasses for 360° Photography are bespoke two part courses which I have developed and delivered for Highlands and Islands Enterprise. They are designed for businesses who wish to adopt and utilise the business benefits of 360° photography and video; to advertise, promote and develop their business through the use of these media.

Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team - East Coast Base Opening

Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team Base Opening, Dingwall

I was delighted to take photographs of the opening of our new East Coast Team Base. This project has been many years in planning and finally we have our long awaited base in the east.

I've embedded the Facebook entry from the DMRT Facebook page below to allow the photographs to tell the story of the day.

Whilst the photograph at the top of the news entry shows a line-up of the team, the reality is that there is a wider family comprising Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team. It's only right and proper to pay tribute to the family and friends who support the team members in so many ways.

About Angus Mackie

Angus Mackie

I’m Angus Mackie, a professional photographer based just north of Inverness on the beautiful Black Isle.  I'm on the North Coast 500 and am well placed to discover most of the Highlands.  The iconic scenery of Glen Affric and the Cairngorms are close by whilst many of the wild and dramatic locations on the west coast are within easy reach.

Mountains, landscapes, coastlines....  As a landscape and panoramic photographer, I enjoy exploring Scotland and its wild and remote places and have discovered some of the best photography locations in the Highlands over the last 35 years of living up here.  With a broad and wide ranging knowledge of the Highlands, I still enjoy finding new locations and fresh perspectives for my photography.  The use of natural light to capture stunning scenery at spectacular locations is very much a key factor for my photography.

I’m a qualified Summer Mountain Leader, a Sea Kayak Leader and a UKCC Level 2 Sea Kayaking coach, with many years experience of leading and guiding.
